Field Hockey is a team sport that has been played since the Middle Ages in parts of Europe and has roots in a similar game played in Ancient Greece as early as 510 BC. The sport continues to be extremely popular in international countries and brings the world together in competition at the Olympic Games, World Cup, World League, Champions Trophy and Junior World Cup.
In the United states, field hockey is regionally centralized to the Northeasters states, extending from Massachusetts down to Virginia. It is also female dominated and mainly played throughout high school and college aged students.
The sport is extremely intricate in rules and game play, which has led to its slow-but-steady growth throughout the US. The reason that field hockey less ubiquitous in the American sports landscape is that the sport’s complexity can make it difficult to learn when compared with simpler field sports such as soccer. Once understood, it is a high paced sport full of strategy.
Efforts by USA Field Hockey are to continue to grow the game by creating a stronger presence of the sport. The governing body is utilizing social media platforms to reach athletes across the country, as well as hosting events and workshops for hands-on skill growth.
